Our Digital Summer Workshops are Back!

Watch this video for an ASL description of the workshop series!

The Summer Community Standard Workshop is here — virtually!

Curious about peer-led organizing and expanding your facilitation skills? Join us for 3 interactive, virtual workshops in June and July 2023. No prior experience is required; however, participants will benefit from registering in the full series!

Our work is grounded in anti-oppression and decolonial values. If you are new to PeerNet BC workshops, we recommend registering in the Planting the Seeds of Anti-Oppression session to learn more about why we use these frameworks. This workshop is foundational!

Each workshop will be facilitated by a combo of 2 of the following facilitators: Athena, Balqees, Ben, Lydia, Mari. For more information on our facilitators please go here.

Workshop 1, Planting the Seeds of Anti-Oppression:

  • June 29, 6pm – 8:30pm. Participants will reflect on their personal relationship to power and broaden their understanding of equity and working together.

Workshop 2, Together Bettering Allyship:

  • July 8, 10:00am-12:00pm. Through experiential learning and group discussions, participants will unpack the idea of “being an ally” and reframe our concept of allyship.

Workshop 3, Nuts and Bolts of Facilitation:

  • July 12, 4:00pm-6:30pm. Participants will build on new and existing skills and tools necessary for effective group facilitation.

We have ASL available for all three workshops.

In addition to hosting our workshops online, we would like to take this space to also remind our readers that we are still working from home due to Covid-19. Phone calls may take longer than usual to receive a response. We suggest emailing us at: info@peernetbc.com, if you need to contact us.

    Planting the Seeds of Anti-Oppression

    June 29, 6pm – 8:30pm

Systemic imbalances of power exist in our society. Recognizing how these imbalances influence group dynamics is an important skill for facilitators,  group members, and community members at large. Utilizing discussion and experiential learning, participants will reflect on their personal relationship to power and have an opportunity to broaden their perspectives on accessibility, allyship, inclusion, power, privilege, and how to move forward together.

    Together Bettering Allyship

    July 8, 10:00am-12:30pm

Through experiential learning and group discussions, participants will unpack the idea of “being an ally” and reframe our concept of allyship. We’ll explore our own roles and relationships with personal, positional, and institutional power and put theory into practice. This workshop is designed for participants with some to no experience with allyship and solidarity work, including those interested in furthering their understanding of allyship. Participants will examine their roles in addressing power dynamics and gain tools to level power imbalances. Participants will explore what we can do to become better practitioners of allyship and inclusive practices.

    Nuts and Bolts of Facilitation

    July 12, 4:00pm-6:30pm

Building off of the ideas introduced in “Planting the Seeds of Anti-Oppression” and “Principles of Peer Support”, this 2.5 hour workshop will delve into specific skills and techniques that assist facilitators in effectively creating safer, more supportive, and productive peer-led groups. Participants will build on new and existing skills and tools necessary for effective facilitation and touch on different facilitation models. This workshop is an introductory workshop and is open to folks with little or no facilitation experience as well as those with facilitation experience looking to brush up on their foundational skills.

Although we are gathering in a digital space, we would like to humbly acknowledge that our organization predominantly does our work on the stolen and unceded homelands and territories of sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh), and xwməθ kwəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations.
